Mysterious 3G icon appears on my Airtel mobile01.21.08

I spent my weekend in a village called Ponmalaippatti, Trichy, Tamil Nadu. While fiddling with my N80 I noticed to my surprise a tiny ‘3G’ below the signal status bar. It was there for only a second and disappeared before I could launch ScreenCap to take a picture of it. I saw it again a few minutes, but again, it disappeared the next second. I checked the Web browsing speed and it wasn’t anything worth mentioning.

I called Airtel to ask if they’re already testing 3G here, if it’s possible, but they denied it. Wish someone explained me the mystery of the 3G logo.

Watching ‘Bourne Ultimatum’ on Nokia N8012.15.07

Storm in a tea cup! The good ol’ N80 ain’t no N95. But it’s my entry point into S60 v3 and I want to make it do all that it can. I think it’s the poor man’s N95/N82. I just wanted to watch the movie on a ‘try anything once’ basis. Because I didn’t expect of it what I shouldn’t, the N80 surprised me on many counts.

I chose to watch The Bourne Ultimatum because the Bourne trilogy is my favourite action movie series.

I just held the mobile about 7 cm away from my eyes. The mp4 video was ‘cinema scope’ and hence took only 3/5 of the screen. It took me a few seconds to settle to right tilt angle to view the video.

bourne_screen_n80_1.jpgNow to the surprises. I had watched the movie in a movie hall. Forget the superheroisms, Bourne 3 was an explosive experience right from the start. A no-nonsense script, crisp editing, out-of-ordinary, pulse-pounding music, great action sequences, and a capable (for this role) actor are all the things that make this movie a hell of an action flick. It would be no exaggeration to say that this phone gave me almost the same experience.

How to: configure wi-fi on Nokia N80 (and probably other S60 v3 phones)12.09.07

One of the main reasons why I bought Nokia N80 is its wi-fi connectivity (for me, the ability to use the broadband Internet connection on my mobile). I struggled to configure it was getting error messages like “No gateway reply” and “WPA authentication failed”. Until I stumbled upon a Nokia forum post explaining the process. That solved the issue for me.

So here’s an illustrated guide (beta!) to configure wi-fi on N80 and most other S60 v3 phones like N91 or even N95.

1. If your active standby screen shows ‘WLAN scanning off,’ press the joystick and select ‘Search for WLAN’. Now your standby screen should show your WLAN connection. Go to Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access points > [your WLAN connection]. When your WLAN connection’s name is selected, centre-press your joystick to edit the settings.

Indiscreet installer12.03.07

This is weird. I was trying to install the amazing Frozen Bubble on my N80 after reading this post from All About Symbian. Once it finished downloading on my mobile, the installer prompted me to register MobiSystem’s Office Suite, which I had installed a couple of weeks ago. I had to cancel the installation to get rid of the message. 1.28 MB of my precious 100 MB limit gone. I had to remove Office Suite to download and install the game again.

Wonder if such a thing has happened to anybody else. As a friend of mine likes to say, “that that application, that that installer.”
